Toys-R-Us in Cary, NC

September 30th, 2006 by Duff OMelia

I now have a better understanding as to why Toy-R-Us is having such trouble competing with the likes of Target, Wal-Mart, and Costco. The store we shopped in is located in the Crossroads shopping center in Cary, North Carolina.

I think the store is awful. Here’s why:

  • SO many items have no price tags. This is so annoying. Other businesses don’t seem to have this issue.
  • We could never find someone to help us find things or give us guidance.
  • The line at the register was quite long. Yet there are employees lingering around the customer service desk. Why aren’t they helping? Does it make sense for a business to waste their customer’s time?
  • No one could seem to tell me if they had a product in stock.
  • The person managing the store that day agreed that many products had no prices on them. He said there wasn’t anything he could do about it because upper management only allows them to do certain things. This is nuts. If you’re managing the store, fix the problem.

It’s just easier to go to Target.

Randy's Pizza

September 28th, 2006 by Duff OMelia

This is my favorite pizza place. Period. The chicken barbecue pizza is delicious.

If you’re going there for lunch, you’ll want to get there early because it always fills up.

This is the best pizza I’ve ever eaten.

Here’s the map to Randy’s. It’s located in Durham, NC.

Video of Will Ferrell as George Bush on Global Warming

September 20th, 2006 by Duff OMelia

I’m not a member of the Green party, nor do I buy into the global warming “science” out there. However, I still thought this video was hilarious.

Square Foot Gardening

September 15th, 2006 by Duff OMelia

This is a great book because gardening in your yard is different from gardening on a farm with a plow. The author, Mel Bartholomew, details his techniques which are designed to accomplish the following:

  • Minimize the work.
  • Maximize the amount of produce in the space you have.
  • Minimize the need to weed and fertilize.
  • Minimize the amount of space your garden takes up.
  • Minimize the number of tools needed to garden.
  • Plan your garden such that you have produce throughout the season rather than have 4 million tomatoes all ripening on the same day.

This is a perfect gardening guide for programmers because Mel is very specific about how many seeds should be planted for each vegetable in each square foot. He’s very specific about what your soil should be composed of.

In my experience, these techniques work.

Living by the Book

September 12th, 2006 by Duff OMelia

This book by Howard and William Hendricks is outstanding. It details the difference between reading the Bible and studying the Bible and presents an incredible method for how to study Scripture. Howard has been teaching this method to his students for decades (one of whom was Chuck Swindoll).

This book is extremely motivational. It is a life changing book.

Venture Voice Podcast

September 8th, 2006 by Duff OMelia

I started listening to this podcast because of Matt’s excellent review. I’ve now listened to about 4 episodes. It is wonderful and I have been greatly enjoying it.

Like Matt said, Venture Voice’s reason for being is to explore how entrepreneurs build their businesses and live their lives. The basic idea is that they interview an entrepreneur in each episode.

Gregory Galant conducts the interviews and he does an incredible job of asking useful questions. He’s an excellent listener and is able to ask insightful questions based on what the interviewee has answered so far.

This podcast is a great way to learn from the successes and failures of entrepreneurs. I highly recommend it.

Coke Zero

September 6th, 2006 by Duff OMelia

I tried Coke Zero last night because my brother Russ wrote this thumbs up review. This is diet soda and it tastes like diet soda. I think I could acquire a taste for it if I drank it every day for a few weeks. Until then, I give it a thumbs down. I’m not a fan.

Remember that Russ likes Splenda. Yuck.

Marriott Hotel Pool

September 4th, 2006 by Duff OMelia

Not many people know that you can actually join the Marriott Hotel pool across from Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, NC. We looked around at a number of swim clubs in the area. They were all way more expensive than the Marriott and none of them were nearly as nice.

It’s only $125 for a 6 month family membership. Can you believe that price? This is what you get:
  • Access to the indoor/outdoor pool. They’re connected under a wall. It’s very nice.
  • Access to the enormous jacuzzi.
  • Access to 2 fitness rooms stocked with treadmills, weights, etc. They’re a nice bonus.

We like it because it’s very clean, it’s often empty, and you get to use their towels! This place cannot be beat.
