Mongrel

Mongrel is a fast HTTP library and server for Ruby that is intended for hosting Ruby web applications of any kind using plain HTTP rather than FastCGI or SCGI.

I recently moved Soapadoo from Lighty to a cluster of mongrels. The performance increase on the site has been significant. Some pages that were taking multiple seconds to load now come up in about a second. The site is much more responsive than it’s ever been. I’m quite happy with Mongrel. Zed Shaw has done some amazing work on it.

Presto PopLite Hot Air Corn Popper

January 8th, 2007 by Duff OMelia

Colleen’s right. This popcorn maker works well. Our old popcorn maker recently bit the dust so we took Colleen’s advice and decided to give this Presto a try.

It’s a solid product. It’s SO much better than the pathetic Toastmaster.

Two of our children have some pretty dry skin. This skin ointment has always helped them more than any other cream we’ve tried. It’s more expensive than most of the other stuff out there but it works quite well.

Being a Christian Without Being an Idiot

January 5th, 2007 by Duff OMelia

I loved reading this book, primarily because I didn’t realize how much of an idiot I had become about many parts of Christianity. The author, Brad Stine, describes himself in a wonderful way:

“I am not a theologian or intellectual – as anyone who has seen my show or watched me try to balance a checkbook can attest – nor am I a prophet, pastor, teacher, professor, or scholar. I am a comedian … a layman, a moron. I’m like you. I am also a follower of Jesus Christ, which defines the very core of my life.”

The subtitle of the book is ‘10 Assumed Truths That Make Us Look Stupid”. The author is right. There are a bunch of things that Christians like me have assumed to be true but simply have no scriptural basis. And those things do make us look ridiculous.

There are parts of this book which are incredibly insightful. There are parts that made me laugh out loud. Brad Stine is an excellent author.

If you’re not a Christian and you have some Christian friends who can be really annoying, this book can help explain why they’re acting so foolishly. If you are a Christian, I beg you to read this book.

Mad Dog 357

January 3rd, 2007 by Duff OMelia

This is the hottest hot sauce I’ve tried to date. 357,000 scoville units of heat is a lotta heat. Just for some comparison:

Hot Sauce Heat
Tabasco 5,000 scoville units
Vicious Viper 250,000 scoville units
Mad Dog 357 357,000 scoville units

2 or 3 drops in a plate of food is plenty Mad Dog for me. I’m enjoying this sauce. It’s quite hot and I think it’s got pretty good flavor as well. The disclaimer on the side of the bottle is great. By opening the bottle, I agree that I’m of sound mind and body and I recognize that this sauce is serious and it can hurt. Good stuff.
