Dr. John Wooten

May 20th, 2007 by Duff OMelia

Dr. John Wooten is a pediatric neurologist at Raleigh Neurology. I think he’s an excellent doctor. Here’s why:

  • He is considered by many to be an expert in the field.
  • He is a patient person and can sit with patients for a long time answering their questions. You never feel rushed or pressured to finish the appointment. This helps patients feel much better about the appointment.
  • He’s a good listener. He actually listens to your questions.
  • He recognizes that he and others in the medical field don’t know everything and he readily admits when the medical community doesn’t know something.
  • He doesn’t see an informed patient as a challenge to his authority like many doctors seem to nowadays. Instead, he encourages people to read and learn and he’s willing to discuss those findings.
  • He encourages patients to seek a second opinion which gives me even more confidence in his abilities.

Azalea Skin Treatment Center

There is a doctor in this practice named William S Ketcham. He was rude and obnoxious and our family will never return to this dermatologist. What a ridiculous experience.

Great Smokey Mountains Railway

We recently took a 5 hour train trip through the mountains and gorges of Murphy, North Carolina and the surrounding area. Our kids loved it.

They let you bring your own food on the train and there’s a one hour layover halfway through the trip. It was an excellent day.

Rental Home in Murhpy, NC

We recently stayed at Jill Goldman’s cabin in the mountains of Murphy, North Carolina.

It was a wonderful stay and Jill’s description of her place was right on. It was quiet and beautiful and our kids loved playing in the woods and mountains surrounding the cabin. If you’re staying in the Murphy area, this cabin is certainly one to consider.

Seth Godin

A gifted author and an expert in the field of marketing and the way ideas spread. I have read almost all of his books (Purple Cow, Permission Marketing, Unleashing the Ideavirus, All Marketers Are Liars, and The Big Moo.)

I have been studying marketing for a number of weeks now and Seth’s books have been the first part of my study. My primary motivation in undertaking such a study was to learn about ways to market this site (Soapbox).

These books have been quite eye-opening. I hadn’t realized how marketing has changed so much in the last few years. Reading Seth’s books actually caused a number of feature changes to this site and it affected a number of fundamental decisions that were made about the site’s philosophy. I’ve also been shocked about how little of marketing I understood and how vital it is to growing a business. What was I thinking being so completely focused on the technology?

I have greatly enjoyed these books and they’ve affected my thinking. I highly recommend them. I’d also recommend that you check out Seth’s Blog.

Pragmatic Bookshelf

The BEST publisher of technical books out there bar none. I have purchased many books from them primarily because they know the books that software developers want written.

They pioneered the idea of beta books by incrementally releasing updates of books in pdf form. These pdf’s are high quality documents full of pertinent hyperlinks. Then when the book is really completed, I can choose to have a hard copy mailed to me.

This beta book service they provide is of tremendous benefit to developers because we can learn about technologies much earlier and we don’t need the initial copies of a book to be perfect. I also think this service makes the eventual released book much higher quality because they’re getting the feedback of paying customers rather than paid-for editors.

Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt (the Pragmatic Programmers who head up the Pragmatic Bookshelf) are experts in the computer field and they’re quite gifted authors to boot. This makes them the perfect publisher because they’re intimately familiar with their customer and their supplier.

I know authors have been quite happy working with the Pragmatic guys because of the tools they’ve developed to help authors write books, generate pdf’s, retrieve old revisions of books, etc. They also share much more of the profits with authors than the old school publishers do.

You can tell they’ve got a winner because the other publishers out there are attempting to imitate some of the Pragmatic strategies. I don’t think they’ll be able keep up as Andy and Dave refine the business and improve it over time. I highly recommend the Pragmatic Bookshelf.

Check out their website.

Samedis Design

Samedis is a web design studio in Chapel Hill, NC. Rich Powell from Samedis designed the layout, look, and feel of this web site. Ain’t it beautiful? I don’t think anyone would use this site if it wasn’t for Samedis.

They do incredible work and they have customers in North Carolina and elsewhere. Check out their remarkable portfolio.

If you want a well designed, usable, and pretty web site I highly recommend Samedis Design. They also do a bunch of other things you might be interested in such as branding, identity, brochures, mailers, business cards, letterhead design, CD cover artwork, poster design, and t-shirt design.

For you developers out there, Rich gets it. He knows exactly how to use CSS, and he plays very well with developers. I’ve really enjoyed working with him.

RoleModel Software

I worked with and for RoleModel for a bunch of years so I’m pretty biased. They do excellent work and they’re people of integrity.

If you’re looking for custom software, a website, or training, they can help. If you’re looking for Java help, I think they’re THE company to talk to. http://rolemodelsoftware.com

Doug Linscott

Doug is an expert mortgage consultant.

I used to live next door to Doug. He always went above and beyond in helping our family even when he’d most likely see no benefit from doing so. He continued to do us favors even after we moved across the country.

If you need a mortgage, Doug can help you. He does excellent work and he handles so many things that other mortgage consultants delegate to their customers.

Getting a mortgage was always a hassle and always seemed to take a ton of time with the paperwork and other nonsense. It wasn’t a hassle working with Doug because he just handled everything.

Also, he showed up at the closing. This was so helpful because he was able to explain the lawyerly jibberish and resolve any paperwork issues when they arose.

I highly recommend Doug. ( doug_linscott @ countrywide.com )

Paul Folmsbee

Paul is an expert realtor and a man of integrity. He knows so much about real estate and he tirelessly serves his customers. Paul has helped us with a number of real estate transactions and each time he has exceeded our expectations.

If you’re buying or selling a home, Paul is the guy. I can name at least a dozen friends who would say the same things about him. Here is Paul’s Web Site

I would not buy or sell real estate without Paul’s help. I highly recommend him.

Thomas Sowell

April 17th, 2006 by Duff OMelia

My favorite political columnist. His articles are so logical. Here’s an archive of articles.

UPDATE: He’s no longer my favorite columnist. I agree with him about many economic issues like gouging. It now seems to me that Sowell blames so much on Democrats and fails to recognize how little difference there really is between Democrats and Republicans. Sowell seems ok with government getting bigger and more powerful, especially for preemptively invading other nations.

In addition, if he’s a student of economics, why isn’t he talking about the Austrian school? Why isn’t he talking about the problems with having the federal reserve? Why no mention of the inflation tax?
